I started working with the guys back in ’83 for the US Festival. I was their security director for the Shout at the Devil, Theatre of Pain, and Girls, Girls, Girls tours. I actually did a little bit of the Too Fast for Love stuff prior to Doc McGhee picking ‘em up—I worked for Avalon Attractions, a promoter who did some Mötley shows at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. As a production guy with Avalon, I knew the guys through working on the theatrical labor stagehand crew over at Perkins Palace in Pasadena. I was familiar with the guys; they were friends. I used to throw ‘em out of backstage when they tried to sneak into shows and shit. The qualifications for the security job when Doug asked me to work for him were just to be an old martial artist and tough guy. That was me. After getting hired, Doc told me that the band were pretty rough-and-tumble guys and that he’d bonus me every time I had to fuck one up. He was laughing. I said, “You got a deal.”
I went around the world a couple times with them as security director. I’d advance all the hotel work, all the shows, the A&R stuff with the record people. They were a great bunch of guys. Nikki is probably one of the most business-oriented guys; T-bone (Tommy Lee), well, he’s a drummer; Vince has the lead singer syndrome; and Mick Mars might be the most pleasant guy I’ve ever met. He never wanted to bother you, he just always wanted to take care of business. All the guys are great. They all gave me gifts at one time or another.
I have some stories. I can remember having to get helicoptered off of a record store roof at an in-store one time, which was pretty exciting. So many kids came and surrounded the building that we couldn’t get out and they had to call a helicopter to pick us up. I think that was in Dallas.
In the bus days, before we got on the planes, I remember getting on the bus and just rockin’ virtually all night long. It was kind of fucked up because they would double-team me. It would be Nikki and Tommy one night, and the next night would be Vince while those guys rested. So they beat me up 24/7 pretty much. You know, having to get limousines and shit at the wee hours of the morning.
I can remember one time we were in Boston and Vince came in wanting to get some hookers, so I flipped open a book and I said, “Whad’ya want? Redhead, blonde?” And he got real cocky and said, “Fuck it, I’ll take one of each!” So I ended up getting him about four or five gals. They came and, in the morning, I turned in an incidental receipt for about $2,800. That was pretty good. I think he did like a seven-gal thing in one day one time. Vince is funny; he liked locker-room talk.
